Everton step up plans to extend Rooney deal

Everton chief executive Trevor Birch says he is ready to fly to Portugal and tie up a long-term deal for Wayne Rooney.

The club have become increasingly alarmed at speculation surrounding the 18-year-old England striker ahead of Euro 2004.

Rooney still has two years of his contract to run but a good tournament is bound to attract the attention of top clubs.

Birch told evertonfc.com: “We have always made clear our desire to see Wayne Rooney commit his long-term future to the club.

“Although Wayne is currently in Portugal we would be happy to open negotiations either during the course of the championships or immediately after they have concluded.

“The offer of a new long-term contract will be made to Wayne. As soon as we are given the go-ahead talks will open.”

Rooney has made a blistering start to his England career with brace against Iceland taking his tally to five goals in 13 appearances.

He is due to partner Liverpool striker Michael Owen in the opening game against France on Sunday.
