Wallace makes assault complaint

Strathclyde Police have confirmed Celtic striker Ross Wallace has made a complaint of assault following last night’s game against Motherwell.

The young player was allegedly kicked by a Motherwell supporter following the 1-1 draw at Fir Park.

Home supporters spilled onto the park after the final whistle but the traditional end of season pitch invasion turned ugly when Wallace claimed he had been attacked by a supporter.

Both managers, Martin O’Neill and Terry Butcher, have condemned the incident, following what was a bad-tempered game between the two sides, and Motherwell boss Butcher has vowed strong action will be taken against the person in question by the Lanarkshire club.

The pitch invasion, which has traditionally taken place after the final home game of the season, was expected and both sets of players were given orders to leave the pitch immediately after the final whistle.

But O’Neill was shocked to discover Wallace has been the subject of an alleged attack and revealed how the young player had to be coaxed in reporting the incident to police.

Strathclyde Police are now carrying out enquiries following the complaint.

A police spokesman said: “A complaint of assault has been made by a Celtic player following an incident at the end of the match between Motherwell and Celtic on 12 May.

“Police are currently carrying out enquiries at this time.”

O’Neill said: “I can understand the fans coming on the field at the end because it is Motherwell’s last home game and I can understand that enthusiasm.

“But there is a problem when an opposition player is kicked. Then it’s a different matter all together.

“I think he’s okay and I don’t think he’s been injured.

“I don’t want any raging headlines because Ross is okay but he took a fair kick.”
