Two first-half goals by Middlesbrough proved enough to beat Manchester City in front of a sell-out crowd at the Riverside.

Massimo Maccarone and Szilard Nemeth put Middlesbrough in front before Paulo Wanchope scored an excellent goal 10 minutes before the break to keep City within touching distance.

Both sides had chances to score in the second half but failed to take them.
