“Going down, but we’ll be back”, sang the optimistic Leeds fans on an emotional day at Elland Road when the club’s relegation to the Football League was confirmed.

Leeds should have won at a canter after going behind to an early Matt Holland wonder strike as Matthew Kilgallon, Jermaine Pennant and Alan Smith put United in control.

But Leeds, as they have done so often this season, self-destructed as Jason Euell scored twice in the closing 17 minutes, his first from the penalty spot, to give Charlton a point.
