Wieghorst eyes Euro 2004 spot
Denmark midfielder Morten Wieghorst is hoping his return to the international arena will be enough to convince Morten Olsen to hand him a place in his Euro 2004 squad.
The 33-year-old, who overcame serious illness during his time with Celtic, returned to the Danish squad after missing the last two friendlies through injury to help the team to a 1-0 win over Scotland last night.
Now the Brondby player is targeting a place in the squad to take on Italy, Sweden and Bulgaria in Group C this summer.
“I have been out injured for four weeks, and that was my first Denmark game of the season,” he said.
“It was nice to get back into the swing of things, and I hope I will get picked for the Danish squad in Portugal.
“It was a good win for us. We got beat in our last friendly against Spain, so we wanted to get back on track with a win – which we got. We played reasonably well at times.”
Wieghorst was delighted to catch up with some old Scottish friends in the Danish capital, particularly a former Parkhead team-mate who was making his debut for Scotland.
He added: “That was my third game against Scotland, and I have always enjoyed them.
“It was nice to see a couple of familiar faces like Malky Mackay out there.”
Olsen made seven substitutions at the Parken Stadium, one of which was Wieghorst’s second-half withdrawal.
But the veteran understands why the national coach broke up the rhythm of his team during the game.
Wieghorst said: “The manager just wanted to have a look at a couple of new players.
“This kind of friendly normally turns out this way in the second half with a lot of changes being made.
“That breaks the rhythm a bit, but I thought we deserved our win.”
