Football suffers ill wind

Bad weather caused the postponement of two matches in the English First Division today.

The visit of promotion-chasing West Brom to West Midlands rivals Stoke was called off due to high winds at the Britannia Stadium.

And Burnley’s home game with Wimbledon also fell victim to similar conditions at Turf Moor.

York’s Division Three game against Yeovil was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch at Bootham Crescent, while heavy rain has claimed six football matches in Scotland.

The biggest casualty is the Motherwell-Hearts game in the Bank of Scotland Premier League where a waterlogged Fir Park pitch forced a postponement of the fixture.

The Bell’s First Division clash between Raith Rovers and Queen of the South is also off.

Division Two matches at Airdrie United, Morton and Stenhousemuir also fell foul of the weather along with the Third Division game between East Stirling and Stranraer.
