Sturrock gets Strachan seal of approval

Gordon Strachan believes his successor Paul Sturrock has all the necessary qualities to thrive as Southampton’s new manager.

Strachan’s former Scotland team-mate Sturrock was a surprise choice to many to replace his compatriot at St Mary’s.

But Strachan, who left Saints last month, has no doubts about ex-Plymouth boss Sturrock’s ability.

“He is a lively character, and I am glad he has been given the chance to do this job,” he told www.saintsfc.co.uk.

“He will appreciate that everything about this club is a real step up. He will treasure this opportunity and make the most of it.

“He has the intelligence and dedication to handle the step up. He has done well to get where he is, and it has all come from hard work.

“He was an incredibly hard-working player who was very honest – and that has continued in management.”

Strachan admits he has seen little of the teams Sturrock has managed so far but he is convinced by his initial credentials and subsequent progress.

“He had a very successful time with St Johnstone and then returned to Dundee United. Sometimes it is a problem going back to your home club, and he left there and did extremely well with Plymouth.

“I was pleased to hear he had got the Southampton job, because he is the type of person I thought would be right for it.

“This club is all about hard work and people trying to improve themselves and others, and he is a manager who wants to go forward.”
