Sunderland sorry

Sunderland today issued an apology after a minority of their fans disrupted a minute’s silence for Welsh legend John Charles at Cardiff on Saturday.

Players and supporters from both clubs paid tribute to the former Leeds and Juventus star following his death earlier that day at the age of 72, but a section of the travelling fans at Ninian Park did not observe the silence, sparking an angry reaction from those who did.

A spokesman for the Black Cats condemned those who caused the disruption and apologised on their behalf.

“The behaviour of the small minority of Sunderland fans who broke the minute’s silence at Cardiff, following the sad death of John Charles, was indefensible and I know that the vast majority of fans would share this view,” the spokesman said.

“On behalf of the club and Sunderland supporters, we would like to offer our sincere apologies.”
