Black Cats buy Byfield from Rotherham

Sunderland this afternoon completed their swap deal with Rotherham for striker Darren Byfield.

The 27-year-old, who is available for selection for tomorrow’s Division One trip to Watford, passed Michael Proctor on the way into the Stadium of Light with the 23-year-old heading for Millmoor.

Byfield, who has signed until the end of the season, has scored 23 times in 58 starts for the South Yorkshire side.

“He has played well against us twice this season and will offer us blistering pace,” manager Mick McCarthy said. “I wouldn’t bring him in if I didn’t think he bettered our squad.

“He’s a great addition to the side and will give us healthy competition for places.”
