Defoe admits mishandling move
Jermain Defoe today admitted he had mishandled his move from West Ham after completing a deal to join London rivals Tottenham.
Defoe controversially handed in a transfer request the day after the Hammers were relegated last season, and never withdrew it.
The 21-year-old was linked with several clubs, including Manchester United and Arsenal, but eventually moved to White Hart Lane on transfer deadline day.
āIāve said a few times it was mistake at the end of the day,ā Defoe admitted.
āIām still young and learnt from that and every time Iāve played for West Ham Iāve worked hard for the team.
āThings happen in football and Iām looking forward to the new challenge.
āIt was the wrong decision but Iāve put that behind me. Iāve said sorry.ā
Defoe revealed the move had come as a surprise when it was completed just before yesterdayās 5pm deadline.
āIām relieved but I didnāt really expect anything to happen,ā he added on Sky Sports News.
āI was sitting at home looking forward to the Bradford game and Iām delighted.
āIām looking forward to linking up with Freddie Kanoute and the other great players at the club.ā
Tottenham manager David Pleat, who now has Kanoute, Robbie Keane, Helder Postiga and Defoe at his disposal, added: āWe have a mix of strikers and all have different qualities.
āJermainās goal record for a 21-year-old is quite exceptional. We hope he is going to have a fine career at Tottenham.ā
