Defoe admits mishandling move

Jermain Defoe today admitted he had mishandled his move from West Ham after completing a deal to join London rivals Tottenham.

Defoe controversially handed in a transfer request the day after the Hammers were relegated last season, and never withdrew it.

The 21-year-old was linked with several clubs, including Manchester United and Arsenal, but eventually moved to White Hart Lane on transfer deadline day.

ā€œI’ve said a few times it was mistake at the end of the day,ā€ Defoe admitted.

ā€œI’m still young and learnt from that and every time I’ve played for West Ham I’ve worked hard for the team.

ā€œThings happen in football and I’m looking forward to the new challenge.

ā€œIt was the wrong decision but I’ve put that behind me. I’ve said sorry.ā€

Defoe revealed the move had come as a surprise when it was completed just before yesterday’s 5pm deadline.

ā€œI’m relieved but I didn’t really expect anything to happen,ā€ he added on Sky Sports News.

ā€œI was sitting at home looking forward to the Bradford game and I’m delighted.

ā€œI’m looking forward to linking up with Freddie Kanoute and the other great players at the club.ā€

Tottenham manager David Pleat, who now has Kanoute, Robbie Keane, Helder Postiga and Defoe at his disposal, added: ā€œWe have a mix of strikers and all have different qualities.

ā€œJermain’s goal record for a 21-year-old is quite exceptional. We hope he is going to have a fine career at Tottenham.ā€
