Bolton hits out at Jancker transfer tantrum

Bolton chairman Phil Gartside has lashed out at Carsten Jancker for going back on an agreement to join the Carling Cup finalists.

Bolton chairman Phil Gartside has lashed out at Carsten Jancker for going back on an agreement to join the Carling Cup finalists.

The giant German striker was expected to become the latest addition to Sam Allardyce’s multi-national squad after Bolton agreed a deal with the player’s agent and club Udinese.

Initially Jancker was supposed to be flying in to England on Saturday but that plan was scuppered when the 29-year-old was told to report for duty ahead of the Serie A encounter with Modena, in which he eventually did not play.

Jancker did not show up on Sunday and then, when he eventually arrived at the Reebok Stadium yesterday, he demanded a two-year contract.

“He turned up at 10 o’clock yesterday and said he wanted a two-year contract,” Gartside told BBC GMR.

“That wasn’t part of the deal that had been agreed with his agent. We wanted him as cover for Kevin Davies but it was always going to be on a pay-per-play basis.

“It was unfortunate that he couldn’t fly in on Saturday as planned but on Sunday he was coming, then he wasn’t. The way it worked out was very disappointing.”

It meant Allardyce’s only deadline-day signing was Liverpool full-back John Otsemobor, who has arrived on loan until the end of the season.

With Nicky Hunt suspended, the 20-year-old is in line to make his debut against Leicester at the Walkers Stadium next Tuesday.

“Jon has tremendous pace and an excellent passing game,” said Allardyce.

“We needed to strengthen our defensive unit and Jon will add competition for places in this vital area.”
