We were worthy of a point - Matteo

Captain Dominic Matteo felt Leeds deserved a point from their battling 1-1 draw at Manchester City.

Mark Viduka put Leeds ahead midway through the first half when he capitalised on a David Sommeil mistake but substitute Antoine Sibierski rescued a point for City late on.

Leeds have now taken eight points from a possible 12 to boost their Barclaycard Premiership status and Matteo believes caretaker manager Eddie Gray has fostered a new-found team spirit.

He told Sky Sports 1: “It’s a difficult place to come, they needed a win and they threw everything at us but we battled on for a well-earned point.

“It keeps us unbeaten for another game and we can look forward.

“It is a good point, you can’t fault their effort. Manchester City might feel a bit aggrieved not to have had three points but that’s what this league is about – it’s a tough league.

“We play as a team, we stick together, we all look out for each other.”

Kevin Blackwell, standing in for Gray who was at his daughter’s wedding, was content with a point.

He said: “I think it was one of those games you set your plan out and try to get something from it and I’m delighted to come out with a draw.

“I thought it was great fighting spirit out there today – they put their bodies in where it matters.”

But there was bad news for Leeds with Lucas Radebe injuring his hamstring.

Blackwell added: “Lucas has completely torn his hamstring. He heard it snap straight away so he will be out for a few weeks.”
