Hedman shocked by Celtic axe

Under-pressure Celtic goalkeeper Magnus Hedman admits he was shocked with the way he was cruelly axed after the Champions League defeat in Lyon.

Under-pressure Celtic goalkeeper Magnus Hedman admits he was shocked with the way he was cruelly axed after the Champions League defeat in Lyon.

The Swedish international was made the scapegoat for his side‘s failure to clinch a knock-out place in the Champions League as Robert Douglas was handed the gloves for Saturday‘s win against Dundee.

When asked if he was surprised by his treatment, Hedman replied: “Yes absolutely.

“The manager read us the squad before the game and I just wasn‘t in it.

“I really don‘t want to comment on this via the press. If something is wrong I‘d rather deal with it in dialogue with the manager.

“I haven‘t heard any explanation but I didn‘t expect it as things don‘t work like that at a big club like Celtic.”

Hedman insists that he should not shoulder the blame.

“I‘m the first to raise my hand if I‘ve made a mistake,” he told the Scottish Express.

“But apart from the long shot I thought I had a good game against Lyon.

“The ball changed direction in mid-air almost as if it hit something.

“I was left wrong-footed and when I tried to turn I slipped. My feet just disappeared beneath me.

“If I hadn’t slipped I would have made the save. Sometimes you’re lucky and sometimes you’re not.”
