Misery for Dutch and Germans
Germany and Holland suffered a bad night in the UEFA Cup as both representatives of each country were sent crashing out.
The biggest casualties were 2002 finalists Borussia Dortmund and Feyenoord, with Schalke and FC Utrecht also falling by the wayside.
However, Barcelona, Roma and Parma all progressed to the third round where the eight Champions League sides finishing third in their groups will join the competition.
Bundesliga giants Dortmund were the biggest scalp. After a 2-2 draw in Germany three weeks ago, Sochaux won 4-0 at home to reach round three.
With away goals to their credit, they opened without fear and were rewarded with a sixth-minute penalty from Pierre-Alain Frau after Salvatore Gambino was sent off.
Santos added a second in the 64th minute before Wilson Oruma made the game safe 14 minutes from time. Jeremy Mathieu put the icing on the cake a minute from time .
Feyenoord paid for their nightmare first-leg defeat at home to Teplice as they bowed out 3-1 on aggregate to the Czechs.
Ferne Snoyl reduced the arrears in the 37th-minute but Pavel Horvath’s well-taken penalty three minutes later ended Feyenoord’s chances.
Schalke lost on penalties after a 3-3 aggregate draw with Brondby while Utrecht were hammered 4-0 by Auxerre.
Parma completed a comprehensive 9-0 aggregate victory over hapless Salzburg after rattling in five goals in the return match in Italy.
Former Sheffield Wednesday striker Benito Carbone and Antonio Sorrentino grabbed two apiece with Emanuele Filippini also on target in the rout.
Roma were made to wait anxiously for their 2-1 aggregate win after being held to a 1-1 draw by Hajduk Split in Croatia.
Trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Rome, Hajduk went ahead through Nino Bule in the 33rd minute.
The Italians showed their European experience, however, winning the tie five minutes from time when Antonio Cassano struck.
In a late kick-off, 10-man Barcelona were still too strong for Greek opponents Panionios despite Luis Enrique’s red card for violent conduct in the 25th minute.
Javier Saviola opened the scoring in the 33rd minute before Luis Garcia netted the second a minute before the break, making it 5-0 on aggregate.
