Wolves back in the hunt through Cameron
Wolves 1 Manchester City 0
Colin Cameron broke Molineux’s 345-minute Premiership goal drought to give Wolves their first win of the season today.
Cameron rose to head Henri Camara’s right-wing cross past David Seaman in the 75th minute and seal three points at the eighth attempt.
And Michael Oakes saved the day in injury-time with a brilliant low save on his line to deny Sun Jihai an equaliser.
Toothless City could have gone into the top four if they had won – but there was little evidence of their high-flying start in this abject performance.
Antoine Sibierski came close with a lob on the hour and Paulo Wanchope struck the outside of the post with eight minutes to go.
But Jihai’s late blast apart, that was the sum total of the chances for Kevin Keegan’s men as Dave Jones’ men hustled and harried their way to a thoroughly-deserved win.
Jones had named an attacking side to take on City with Kenny Miller handed his first Premiership start alongside the returning Nathan Blake and Henri Camara.
And Jones’ ambition immediately paid off as his side made a fine start, Miller troubling Seaman inside the first 30 seconds then almost reaching Colin Cameron’s left-wing cross in front of goal.
Camara should have put Wolves ahead in the fifth minute from Cameron’s corner when he blazed a left-foot shot over the crossbar from the edge of the box.
That was destined to be the best moment of a dismal first half in which Wolves hustled and harried and comfortably kept a strangely toothless City side at bay.
Camara made space to fling in a 23rd minute cross which the diving Cameron just failed to reach.
With Anelka not impressing City were forced to resort to long-range efforts with Paulo Wanchope’s powerful drive blocked by Jody Craddock.
At the other end Lee Naylor’s through-ball provided Miller with an opening in the 34th minute but the striker miscontrolled and the chance went begging.
City’s best chance of the half came in the 39th minute when David Sommeil squeezed past two defenders but saw his cross held low by Oakes.
Wolves came out firing for the second half with Cameron forcing Seaman to make a simple save after stabbing a shot goalwards in the opening seconds.
And in the 47th minute Wolves came even closer after Camara had dispossessed Jihai on the left.
Camara raced into the box and trickled a cross across the face of goal which Blake just failed to reach.
Miller then produced a fine cross into the City box and although Blake beat Jihai to the header he found little power and headed straight at Seaman.
Michael Tarnat finally had a shot on target for City in the 53rd minute after Cameron had fouled Sun Jihai and he struck a low free-kick straight at Oakes.
Sibierski came closest for City on the hour after slack Wolves defending allowed Anelka to find him free on the left 25 yards from goal.
The midfielder attempted a lob which beat Oakes but sailed narrowly over the crossbar.
Molineux erupted when Cameron rose to head Camara’s cross past Seaman and put Wolves in front.
Seaman was initially at fault for spilling Camara’s first cross which Sommeil booted back to the African.
His second delivery was much better – and also his last contribution as he limped off shortly afterwards while the thoroughly disappointing Anelka was also replaced by Robbie Fowler.
Wolves held out in a torrid final few minutes with Paulo Wanchope hitting the outside of Oakes’ post then Jihai forcing his brilliant low save out of the keeper in injury-time.
