Rotherham's Irish international striker Alan Lee has agreed to join Division One rivals Cardiff for an initial fee of £850,000 (E1,211,678), subject to him passing a medical.

The deal could rise depending on how many appearances and goals the 24-year-old scores for the Bluebirds – and whether Cardiff achieve promotion to the Premiership.

Rotherham turned down an approach from Cardiff for Lee in the summer but Lee handed in a transfer request after Tuesday night’s Carling Cup victory over York, the Millers’ board were forced to accept Cardiff’s revised offer.

A statement on Rotherham’s official website, www.themillers.co.uk, read: “[Alan] Lee had made in quite clear that he wasn’t prepared to try and reach a compromise with the Millers with regard to extending his career at Millmoor with the much bigger salary which is on offer at Cardiff the main attraction.”

Lee joined Rotherham from Burnley in September 2000 and scored 41 goals in 122 appearances.
