David O’Leary believes Aston Villa have given themselves the perfect platform to get their Barclaycard Premiership campaign off to a flying start at Portsmouth next weekend.

Villa wrapped up what has been an encouraging pre-season campaign with a 6-0 romp over eircom League side St Patrick’s to win the Dublin Tournament at Tolka Park yesterday.
