Reid happy with Domi signing

Leeds boss Peter Reid is expecting new signing Didier Domi to provide his side with much-needed versatility for next season.

Domi today finally completed Leeds’ customary lengthy medical procedure and now joins the Elland Road club on a year-long loan from Paris St Germain with a view to a permanent £2m (€2.8m) move next summer.

The 25-year-old, who made 70 appearances for Newcastle during his first spell in England after joining the Magpies in December 1998, can operate at left-back or on the left wing and so offers Reid options.

“There were a few loose ends that needed finalising in terms of his medical today but yesterday’s talks went great and we’ve been able to move the deal forward quite quickly,” said Reid.

“But versatility is a good word when it comes to football and Didier will certainly give us that.

“He can play at left-back or left midfield but let’s get him in and get him settled before we start deciding where he’s going to play for us.”

Domi becomes Reid’s third signing following the captures of Jody Morris and fellow Frenchman Zoumana Camara earlier this summer, with the United manager now due to turn his attentions to an attacking midfielder or another striker.

Leeds have lacked creativity in their miserable pre-season schedule to date, and now have just two matches remaining to resolve matters ahead of their opening Premiership fixture at home to Domi’s former club Newcastle on August 17.

Despite apparent training ground bust-ups recently, with Reid understood to have been involved in a war of words with Mark Viduka, skipper Dominic Matteo has outlined his plans to further squad unity this season

Leeds once prided themselves on team bonding, but in recent times the club’s off-field antics have damaged morale.

Matteo is now proposing a regular knees-up to bolster spirits as he revealed: “People have tended to do their own thing, or maybe three or four of us get together.

“But a lot of the lads have gone home to their families. That is fine, but I think it would be nice to get the squad together every couple of weeks for a meal and a laugh and a talk.

“I think that’s something we will do. As captain this year, I’ll suggest it - if things are going wrong, or if things are going good.”

Speaking to Leeds Leeds Leeds magazine, Matteo added: “I’m not saying drinking’s the right thing to do, but it’s so important to have a good team spirit, go out for meals, all that stuff.”
