Gunners land Lehmann

Arsene Wenger tonight confirmed the Gunners have signed Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, according to Sky Sports News.

Wenger has been searching for a replacement for David Seaman following his departure to Manchester City.

And, after being linked with a long list of keepers, he has opted for the 33-year-old German international.

Wenger revealed he had clinched the deal after the Gunners’ 2-0 pre-season friendly win over Austria Vienna tonight, secured by first-half goals from Dennis Bergkamp and Francis Jeffers.

Wenger also indicated Lehmann will be his first-choice keeper next season ahead of Stuart Taylor.

Earlier Lehmann revealed a deal was close to completion on his personal website www.fussballprofis.de

“If I pass the medical, I think I’ll be transferred to Arsenal,” he said.

According to reports in Germany earlier this week, Arsenal agreed personal terms with Lehmann early in negotiations between the two clubs.

The Bundesliga club were seeking a fee of around £2.5m, with Arsenal reportedly unwilling to go beyond £1.75m.

The Gunners had been linked with moves for Turkey international Rustu Recber, who opted for Barcelona, Leeds’ Paul Robinson and Valencia’s Santiago Canizares.
