Dermot Keely was unveiled as the new manager of Eircom League side Derry City in the last hour, following the resignation of Kevin Mahon on Saturday.

Keely was manager at First Division Kildare County up until last Thursday, when he retired from the Thoroughbreds.

He will now take charge of City when they open their defence of the Carlsberg FAI Cup against Cobh Ramblers on Thursday night.

Keely has previously been in charge at Shelbourne, Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk, and guided all three clubs to league success.

A school teacher of some eighteen years experience, the charismatic Dubliner will look to detain Derry's slump towards relegation - as a string of defeats, most recently 4-0 away to Longford, sees them just one place off the bottom of the Premier Division table.
