David Beckham today arrived in Spain and was immediately whisked away in a convoy of police cars for a medical ahead of his presentation as a Real Madrid player.

The England captain was expected to undergo some three hours of tests ahead of a major press conference tomorrow.

Dozens of journalists and a handful of fans had gathered at the Torrejon military airbase north of Madrid where his private plane landed early this afternoon.

Fans waiting at the gates to the complex screamed and cheered as the convoy then sped off towards the Spanish capital pursued by photographers and camera crew.

Many of those gathered had tried in vain to catch a glimpse of the 28-year-old midfielder, who was shielded from attention behind tinted windows.

He was expected to head for the private Zarzuela Clinic near the club’s training ground where an entire floor had been set aside for the medical.

Beckham’s wife Victoria was also expected to be making the trip.
