Ed de Goey hoping to stay in Premiership

Dutch international goalkeeper Ed de Goey is keen to follow up interest from midlands rivals Birmingham and Wolves after being released by Chelsea.

De Goey’s six-year stay at Stamford Bridge ended earlier this month when Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri decided not to offer a new deal, insisting he had enough goalkeeping cover at the club following the signing of Jurgen Macho.

That news has alerted Birmingham boss Steve Bruce as well as Premiership new boys Wolves and De Goey’s agent Ger Lagendijk told the BBC Sport website the keeper is desperate to stay in the Premiership.

“He wants to stay in England but if we cannot find a deal then he will return to Holland to play,” Lagendijk said.

“There is still a possibility he will move to Fenerbahce, should Rustu Recber complete his move to Barcelona.”

Recber was injured during Turkey’s Confederations Cup semi-final defeat against France on Thursday but is expected to complete a move to Barcelona in the coming weeks.

That would give De Goey a tempting option, but the 36-year-old keeper does not want to leave England.

“Steve Bruce is very interested in him and I spoke to Karren Brady (managing director), but we have not got as far as having talks with Birmingham,” said Lagendijk.

“The interest from Wolves has come through another agent but it is a definite interest.

“Ed is keen to talk to both clubs because he wants to play for two more years.”
