Spurs fans happy with Portuguese capture

Tottenham fans have praised the capture of Helder Postiga as a “step in the right direction” but have called on the club to make the Portuguese striker the first of many signings this summer.

Manager Glenn Hoddle completed his first transfer of the summer today when 20-year-old Postiga signed on a five-year contract from UEFA Cup winners Porto.

He is expected to be officially unveiled at White Hart Lane this afternoon.

Postiga, suspended for the UEFA Cup final win over Celtic, is rated as a future star for Portugal, and the transfer has excited Spurs supporters.

Tottenham Trust spokesman Daniel Wynne said: “This is a step in the right direction and it shows a lot of ambition on the part of the club. He is an exciting young player with a proven strike rate.

“However, this has got to be the first of many signings this summer as other areas of the squad also need bolstering.”

Postiga scored 19 goals for the Portuguese champions last season and his form led to him making his full international debut, when he made a good impression. He recently scored twice in a 4-0 win over Bolivia.

Wynne added: “This is an expensive signing in the current climate but Spurs appear to be making their money work for them, and they are to be applauded, so let’s hope it pays off.

Hoddle needed to sign a quality striker after losing Teddy Sheringham, Les Ferdinand and Sergei Rebrov from last season’s squad, and is delighted with the move.

“He is a player who will add definite striking quality to our squad and is a young player of proven ability” said Hoddle.

“I’m sure our supporters will enjoy watching him over the coming seasons.”

Chairman Daniel Levy added: “This exciting signing demonstrates our commitment to increasing the strength and quality of our playing squad and will hopefully assist us in our quest for success next season and beyond.”
