Samuel Eto’o did his best to find a Premiership suitor tonight as he lashed in a magnificent 25-yard effort to condemn World Cup winners Brazil to defeat in their opening Confederations Cup game.

After 83 minutes of largely uneventful play, Eto’o latched on to a loose ball, which had been misjudged by the otherwise excellent Lucio, and fired a first-time shot past Dida in the Brazil goal.

Earlier today a representative of Eto’o claimed Manchester United are monitoring the Real Mallorca striker.

Willie McKay says Sir Alex Ferguson’s scouts have already checked on the 22-year-old who Tottenham were pursuing last summer.

He said: “Samuel’s got three years left on his contract but he’s desperate to come to the Premier League.

“I’ve put him forward to Manchester United and they’ve watched him recently.

“He’s scored 15 goals this year but the problem is that Mallorca want £10million for him.”

The Cameroon star’s former club – Real Madrid – have a massive 50% sell-on clause in his contract but that clause expires this summer.

McKay said before tonight’s game: “I hope the penny drops tonight for one of the big clubs in England.”

And his player’s performance overshadowed that of Paris St Germain’s Ronaldinho, reportedly a target of United, Barcelona and Real Madrid, who was booed throughout by the Stade de France crowd.
