Nationwide League want end to transfer window
The Nationwide Football League have failed in a bid to get the Barclaycard Premiership to abandon the transfer window system.
The league wanted their richer counterparts to drop the system which they claim is costing their clubs much needed revenue.
With transfer prices dropping, Football League clubs have seen their projected income fall because they can no longer groom players to sell on to bigger clubs.
But the league’s call to drop the transfer window system has been rejected by their Premier League counterparts.
“The use of the transfer system on a domestic basis by the Premier League has had a disastrous effect on the transfer market,” said Football League spokesman John Nagle.
“Transfer spending has traditionally acted as a method of wealth distribution which has given clubs the incentive to develop the next generation of talent.
“But in the last 12 months the domestic transfer market has declined by half, which has led to clubs cutting back their playing staff.
“Eleven League clubs have now scrapped their reserves and, more worryingly, two more have cancelled all forms of youth development.
“The release of another 364 players at the end of the season means the number employed by clubs has dropped by 25% in the past two years. Many are finding it virtually impossible to find pro clubs.”
