Legendary Liverpool striker Ian Rush has labelled Manchester United defender Gary Neville “diabolical” and a “disgrace” for his behaviour in Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

Rush, currently employed by the Anfield club as a striking coach, was upset at the way the England defender immediately dashed towards referee Mike Riley following Sami Hyypia’s foul on Ruud van Nistelrooy which brought about the fifth-minute penalty and opening goal.

He had no doubts the Liverpool captain had to be sent off but deplored Neville’s actions in seemingly calling for Riley to issue the red card.

“Pros don’t want that, it was diabolical,” Rush told the official Liverpool website, www.liverpoolfc.tv.

“Sami had to go, no complaints, but it’s disgraceful from a fellow professional.”
