The 2014 World Cup will be played in South America, world football’s governing body FIFA today announced.

The decision was made by FIFA’s executive committee at a meeting in Zurich as part of their agreed policy to rotate the finals around the continents – the 2010 tournament is to be staged in Africa.

Meanwhile FIFA are considering a proposal to increase the number of teams competing in the finals of the 2006 World Cup in Germany from 32 to 36 countries.
