Liverpool beat fierce rivals to win Cup

Goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen ensured Gerard Houllier's Liverpool beat Manchester United 2-0 in the Worthington Cup at the Millennium Stadium today.

Gerrard struck after 39 minutes, his deflected shot looping over the stranded Fabien Barthez.

The Reds lived on their luck in the second half as United pressed forward, with Jerzy Dudek forced to pull off a string of fine saves.

Michael Owen ensured the win when he finished off a deadly Liverpool counter-attack after 86 minutes to ensure silverware - and European football next season - for Liverpool.
