Fergie won't apologise for Becks graze

Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson today refused to apologise for the David Beckham eyebrow injury.

Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson today refused to apologise for the David Beckham eyebrow injury.

At a press conference at Old Trafford ahead of tomorrow’s Champions’ League clash with Juventus, Ferguson laughed off the incident, which he again described as “a freak”.

He said the England captain had not received stitches to his left eyebrow, but just a graze, which was dealt with by the United team doctor.

Beckham received the injury following United's 2-0 home defeat against Arsenal in the FA Cup on Saturday.

After the game, the furious Manchester United manager kicked a football boot across the dressing room, which hit Beckham above the eye.

At today’s press conference, Alex Ferguson said that whatever happens in a dressing room “remains sacrosanct”.

He said: “There’s no way I could betray the trust of the players. It’s 100% loyalty. It can never be anything less than that.”

However, he said he felt he had to comment due to the amount of publicity created by the incident.

He said: “There was an incident – a freak.”

He jokingly added: “If I’d tried it 100 times or a million times, it wouldn’t happen again. If it did, I would carry on playing.”

He said: "Contrary to some reports, David did not have any stitches. It was a graze. It was dealt with by the doctor.''

He said everyone must now move on and then left the press conference, refusing to answer further questions.

He also refused to apologise when asked by several reporters.

Earlier, the Manchester United boss was joined by Rio Ferdinand at the press conference, which was attended by dozens of reporters.

Photographers were asked to leave after they continually took pictures of Ferguson, who joked with them: “If you don’t leave, then I am leaving.”

Beckham was pictured yesterday in Manchester and arriving at training with his blond hair swept back in a hair band, visibly showing off the mark above his eye.
