All square with Leeds and Palace
Crystal Palace 1, Leeds 1 (half-time)
Crystal Palace wing-back Julian Gray continued against Leeds where he left off against Liverpool as he secured his side a first-half FA Cup fifth round equaliser at Selhurst Park.
Gray, who scored in the fourth round replay win at Anfield, struck shortly after Gary Kelly had put Leeds ahead but Palace were then denied a second goal even though Tommy Black’s shot looked to have crossed the line.
Those, however, were rare moments of goalmouth interest in what was otherwise a patchy midfield battle.
Johnson did produce a neat turn inside the penalty area but Robinson was alert enough to smother the ball at his feet, while Julian Gray delivered a long-range effort well wide.
Even that was closer than Harte’s free-kick, which flew harmlessly over the bar, so the shock which greeted Leeds’ opener on 32 minutes was understandable.
Smith had at least started to give his team added impetus and was brought down on one of his forward bursts to earn his side a free-kick 25 yards out.
There was little immediate danger, or so Palace thought. While keeper Berthelin was still lining up his wall, Gary Kelly seized the initiative and delivered a powerful shot into the far corner.
That was the long-overdue catalyst to bring the match alive, with Palace equalising within just two minutes of the restart.
When Leeds only half cleared a corner, Gray – who had scored at Anfield – let fly with a volley which deflected off Radebe and just evaded Kelly on the goal line.
Leeds had a considerable double escape thereafter, however, when Danny Butterfield’s shot was cleared off the line by Danny Mills and then fell invitingly to Black.
His close-range effort struck Radebe, possibly on the arm, but replays showed that the ball almost certainly crossed the line in any case.
