GAA president Sean McCague has sympathised with the failed Celtic Euro 2008 bid but argued the GAA played by the rules all along.

GAA president Sean McCague has sympathised with the failed Celtic Euro 2008 bid but argued the GAA played by the rules all along.

The joint Austrian/Switzerland bid to host the Euro 2008 soccer championships eventually got the nod with the Celtic bid believed to be back down in fifth place.

The poor placing may be down to the absence of Croke Park on the Irish stadia list but McCague said: "The position in regard to the potential use of Croke Park for the tournament was made clear on a consistent basis since the GAA were first informed of the bid proposal nearly a year ago."
