Spurs up to seventh with Baggies win

Tottenham 3, West Bromwich Albion 1 (full-time)

Christian Ziege’s early strike from a free kick and Robbie Keane’s cool finish just before the half hour mark, sustained Tottenham through an unlikely revival from West Brom at White Hart Lane.

Substitute Scott Dobie’s 73rd-minute strike gave the Baggies brief hope of a rare away point.

But it was Tottenham substitute Gus Poyet who sealed their victory with a scrambled third goal 10 minutes from time after yet another substitute Steffen Iversen, saw his shot beaten out by Russell Hoult.

Just when Albion looked like running out of ideas, Dobie pulled them back into the game with a lovely strike in the 73rd minute.

Admittedly, Spurs defenders gave him all room he needed to turn with the ball and run at Dean Richards but there was no answer to his powerful low drive which he struck low into the far corner from the inside right channel on the edge of the area.

Spurs immediately sent on Poyet in place of Sheringham to plug the left side of midfield but the Uruguayan did more than that, grabbing the final touch in a crowded goalmouth to make the game safe for Spurs after fellow substitute Iversen’s hooked shot was beaten out by Hoult in the 79th minute.
