Sven-Goran Eriksson tonight handed Jonathan Woodgate his first England start for more than three years in the opening Euro 2004 qualifying tie in Slovakia.

With the match going ahead despite fears of a postponement due to heavy rain, Woodgate was partnering Gareth Southgate in the centre of defence.
