Brett Ormerod’s first-half double, following up his midweek hat-trick in the Worthington Cup, sunk Manchester City at St Mary’s where Southampton scored twice - the first after just 45 seconds - in a Premiership match for the first time this season.

But their best display of the campaign was marred by the sending off of substitute Marain Pahars for two yellow cards - referee Matt Messias issuing the second yellow six minutes from time when he ruled Pahars had taken a dive over the challenge of City sub Lucien Mettomo in search of a penalty.
