FA to investigate Berkovic 'cut-throat' gesture

The Football Association today confirmed they are investigating Eyal Berkovic’s 'cut-throat' gesture to the Maine Road fans during Tuesday’s Worthington Cup clash between Manchester City and Crewe.

The Israeli international is also at the centre of a separate City inquiry following the incident during the 3-2 win, which it is claimed caused a female fan to burst into tears.

Berkovic has so far failed to confirm the reason for his actions, which came after he had been denied a penalty and had allegedly received some abuse from home supporters.

“Eyal Berkovic is to be investigated following Tuesday night’s match between Manchester City and Crewe at Maine Road and an alleged incident involving the Manchester City player,” confirmed an FA statement today.

“We can confirm that we are aware of these reports and are studying reports from the game and are investigating the matter further.”

It is the latest in a number of public relations blunders by the City squad.

Irish international Richard Dunne is only just returning to action after being ordered to embark on his own training programme after turning up for training in a ‘disheveled state’, while Australian hard-man Danny Tiatto was branded ’a disgrace’ by manager Kevin Keegan following a two-footed challenge on David Thompson which saw him red carded just six minutes after his introduction against Blackburn last month.

Tiatto is suspended from tomorrow’s encounter with Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium but Berkovic has travelled south.
