Former Manchester United striker Erik Nevland was a happy man after scoring two goals in tonight‘s 4-2 UEFA Cup first round defeat of Chelsea.

Claudio Ranieri‘s Blues slipped out of the competition 5-4 on aggregate after Nevland‘s brace.

The 24-year-old striker, who was rejected by Manchester United four years ago, notched his opening goal in the 59th minute.

And four minutes from time he got Viking‘s decisive fourth goal to move the Norwegian side into the second round of the competition and dump Chelsea out of the competition in embarrassing style for the third successive season.

Nevland, who made only two appearances in as many years while on loan at Old Trafford, scoring one goal, said afterwards: “It‘s not an unexpected result if you see the conditions here – we knew it would be difficult for Chelsea.”

“We played brilliantly today and are so happy. It‘s always difficult to play away in Europe for any team and we proved that here.

“Chelsea are a great team – but we proved we can beat them.

“I‘m pleased to be here now and do well for Viking, We want a good draw in the third round and to keep winning.”
