Villa: Alpay absence was permitted

Aston Villa have insisted that unsettled central defender Alpay had the “full permission” of manager Graham Taylor to return home before Sunday’s home Premiership clash with Everton after he had been left out of the final 16.

There was strong speculation prior to the game that the Turkey international had driven away from Villa Park in a rage after hearing of his complete omission from Taylor’s plans.
