Cheltenham shock Canaries in Worthington Cup

Cheltenham pulled off arguably the shock result of the Worthington Cup first round by dumping Norwich out of the Worthington Cup.

Nigel Worthington’s high-flying Canaries, who lie third in the First Division, were shot down by two Tony Naylor strikes as Cheltenham recorded their first victory of the season.

Naylor, the former Port Vale and Crewe centre forward, struck after 30 minutes and again on the stroke of half-time before Hugh McAuley booked their passage through with a third goal seven minutes from time.

Dane David Nielsen, in the side in place of injured top scorer Paul McVeigh, twice failed to hit the target for Norwich before the visitors took a shock lead.

Veteran striker Naylor beat goalkeeper Rob Green from a tight angle to put the Second Division side, without a win before the game, ahead on the half hour.

Iwan Roberts then missed a header from close-range before Naylor doubled his side’s advantage, drilling the ball home from 18 yards just before half-time.

Roberts and Alex Notman were both foiled by goalkeeper Steve Book as Norwich looked for a way back into the game, which never materialised.

Indeed, McAuley curled home a superb shot eight minutes from time to rub salt into Norwich’s wounds.

Cheltenham’s efforts were matched by Third Division Cambridge, who thumped Reading 3-1 at the Abbey Stadium.

The U’s led at the interval after headers from defender Andy Duncan and Dave Kitson before Steve Tudor rose to nod in the third and seal the win.

Matthew Upson got his first goal for Reading since moving on loan from Arsenal, but his late strike was little consolation for the Royals.

Wrexham pulled off a thrilling victory over First Division Bradford, who had taken the lead with only seven minutes remaining.

Danny Cadamarteri fired his 83rd minute effort into the top right hand corner to seemingly send the Bantams through to the next round.

But Wrexham, inspired by Andrew Morrell, hit back in devastating fashion.

First, in the 88th minute, Morrell met Hector Sam’s header to level the scores from close range and then, in the final seconds, the striker the ball on for Carlos Edwards to slot home the winner.

Bury beat 10-man Stoke 1-0 after the Potters wasted a two gilt-edged chances in the opening half hour.

Stoke’s Sergi Shtaniuk twice had efforts cleared from the line before Jamie Stuart’s superb diving header after 56 minutes gave Bury the lead.

Brynjar Gunnarsson was sent off for a clumsy challenge on Michael Nelson after 78 minutes.

Oxford United also had a man sent off, but they already had a 1-0 win over Bristol City sewn up courtesy of James Hunt’s 17th-minute strike when Andrew Scott was shown a second yellow card just before the final whistle.

Tranmere left it late to beat Hartlepool after Eifion Williams’ drive with 11 minutes to go levelled the game at 1-1.

Simon Haworth had given the Merseysiders a 37th-minute lead, and they responded at being hauled back to 1-1 by snatching victory with eight minutes remaining when Ryan Taylor struck a magnificent free-kick into the top right of Anthony Williams’ goal.

Huddersfield had their game against Darlington wrapped up after just 16 minutes, when Matthew Clarke headed the past his own keeper to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead.

Simon Baldry struck after only three minutes to put Huddersfield ahead and there was no way back once Clarke had headed the ball to the left of his Darlington team-mate Andy Collett.

At Brisbane Road, QPR staged a late comeback but left it too late as Leyton Orient ran out 3-2 winners.

The O’s raced into a 2-0 lead by the interval, a quality finish from Jamal Campbell-Ryce and a Lee Thorpe header.

Andy Thomson responded from the spot after 71 minutes after Richard Langley had been fouled, but a magnificent volley from Gary Fletcher restored Orient’s two-goal advantage and ensured Kevin Gallen’s 89th minute drive was just consolation for the visitors.

Stockport player-manager Carlton Palmer opened the scoring as his side ran out 3-1 winners over Lincoln.

Luke Beckett and Robert Clare scored in the second half, either side of an Adie Mike strike for the visitors.

Gillingham’s player-boss Andy Hessenthaler was also in on the action, scoring the only goal to beat Torquay.

Jason Jarrett’s drilled effort just after the half hour earned Wigan a 1-0 victory at Northampton.

Oldham edged a thrilling tie with Notts County 3-2. The Latics twice took the lead, through Christopher Killen and Anthony Carss, but were pegged back each time before Clyde Wijnhard converted the winner with nine minutes remaining.

Crewe eased past Port Vale with a Rodney Jack brace after 17 and 20 minutes while Rotherham struck three times in the second half to see off Carlisle.

Andy Monkhouse and Mark Robins put them two up after 69 minutes and though Brendan McGill pulled one back for the visitors, substitute Paul Warne came off the bench to seal the win.

John Paul McGovern scored the only goal as Sheffield United beat in-form York at Bramall Lane while Neil Shipperley scored twice as Wimbledon beat Southend 4-1

Walsall’s Jorge Leitao got the only goal of the game against Shrewsbury after 23 minutes.
