Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes will undergo an operation on his injured knee later this week and has been ruled out of action for between three and six weeks.

The England midfielder was withdrawn from Sven-Goran Eriksson’s team last week in the build-up to Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Portugal at Villa Park, but caused a storm of controversy when he turned out for United in the midweek victory over Middlesbrough.

However, the Old Trafford club have now confirmed Scholes has been booked in for surgery on his knee.
