Peter Schmeichel was happy - but tired - after marking his home Barclaycard Premiership debut for Manchester City with a win today.

Darren Huckerby’s 36th-minute goal gave Kevin Keegan’s side victory over Newcastle.

It could have been more, although a failure to convert their chances meant Schmeichel needed to be at his best to make sure City took all three points from the game.

The Dane, who helped Manchester United to the treble in 1999, said: “It was hard work – perhaps harder than it should have been.

“We should have converted one or two more chances – but we won and that’s important after last Saturday.

“I’m tired now but I feel all right now.”

He continued on Sky Sports 1: “The goals we conceded against Leeds were a bit cheap – it was too easy for them.

“But the concentration today overall was a lot better. We had a good start to the game and we built on that.

“As the game went on we got more confidence and we managed to hold on – and that’s the important thing.”
