Portsmouth chase Merson

Portsmouth are keen on Aston Villa midfielder Paul Merson, who could be allowed to leave the midlands club.

Talks are understood to have taken place between the clubs for Merson, who has upset manager Graham Taylor by claiming on his website that the Villa chief should make Alpay captain in a bid to keep the Turkish defender at the club.
