Rebel clubs discuss Old Firm delay

The 10 non-Old Firm Scottish Premier League clubs were meeting today to discuss the on-going television crisis.

A new TV deal looked set to be brokered swiftly after new Rangers chairman John McClelland admitted earlier this month that the Glasgow giants had conceded ground in negotiations over voting and income.

But, while the 10 other clubs have agreed to the deal, the Old Firm have still not pledged their written support and are concerned about the share of income.

In April, Celtic and Rangers withdrew their support for the SPL TV proposal which was the brainchild of SPL chief executive Roger Mitchell.

In response, the renegade 10 announced their intention to quit the SPL which would have left the Glasgow giants without opposition once the notice period had ended in two years’ time.

However BBC Scotland are now the only runners in the race to broadcast coverage of the SPL next season after Sky Sports decided not to renew their contract.

McClelland had also claimed the pair would agree to a change from the previous 11-1 voting system, which scuppered SPL TV, to 8-4.

However, those verbal agreements now appear to be in doubt.

The opening weekend of the SPL season is now unlikely to have any coverage as the race against time continues.

All 12 clubs are set to meet at an EGM of the SPL on Wednesday.
