Ferdinand hands Leeds transfer request

Leeds United's Rio Ferdinand has handed in a transfer request to his club, according to his agent.

The 23-year-old has been mulling over his future amid increased speculation that he could be set for a move to Leeds’ bitter rivals Manchester United.

New Leeds boss Terry Venables had hoped to keep Ferdinand, who was one of the star performers at this summer’s World Cup.

Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale said yesterday the club would reject any request for a move as they aim to hang on to the £35m-rated (€54.4m) defender.

He said: ‘‘The only thing I can confirm is that if Rio Ferdinand hands in a transfer request it will be turned down.

‘‘We’ve had no offers for Rio Ferdinand so it amazes me he has a choice to make. He is going nowhere. Where does he think he is going - into thin air?’’
