Peter Taylor has topped a supporters’ poll to take over from Gianluca Vialli at Watford.

The Vicarage Road club have yet to appoint a long-term successor since the Italian’s sacking as part of a cost-cutting drive on June 14, and fans are split over who it should be.

But former England coach Taylor is available after leaving Brighton at the end of last season having taken them into Division One.

He received 26.5 % of the vote in the Watford Observer newspaper.

Reserve team coach Ray Lewington is in temporary charge of the team, but fans are eager for a big name to take over, and Lewington received just 1.5 % of votes cast, despite being the current front-runner for the job.

Hornets chief executive Tim Shaw explained: "We will wish to interview a number of candidates for the position and so this will take some time.

"But I can think of nobody that I would rather have help us in these circumstances," he said in a statement.
