Former Republic of Ireland boss and Leeds United defender Jack Charlton has admitted he was stunned to hear of the decision to sack David O'Leary as manager of the club.

‘‘It was a bit of a shock to me,’’ he said.

‘‘I didn’t expect it, but in football sometimes you don’t know what to expect.

‘‘I thought David was doing a good job and was quite happy there and everybody was quite happy with David.

‘‘I know him very well and I was pleased with the way things had gone for him.

‘‘But I also know the chairman (Peter Ridsdale) is a straightforward, honest guy who knows what he’s doing.

‘‘Somewhere along the line, we’ll find out what’s happened.’’
