Okacha set for international retirement

Nigeria captain Jay Jay Okocha is set to play his last game for the Super Eagles against England on Wednesday.

The midfielder has had an outstanding World Cup despite the Nigerians losing their first two games.

But the 28-year-old Paris St Germain star, who is seeking a move to the English Premiership, said: ‘‘I think this may be my last tournament for Nigeria.

‘‘I think it is time to give others a chance to play for the national team. One cannot be there forever.’’

He added: ‘‘There are some leaving the scene and we hope that those coming after us will do better than we have done.’’

But coach Festus Onigbinde believes Okocha will be missed massively by the team.

‘‘Jay Jay and all the others believe that everyone is useful for the team, but his experience, technical ability and discipline stand out,’’ he said.

‘‘He is captain and has carried that role very well in terms of both leadership and performance - Jay Jay means a lot to the team.’’
