Ireland's task is now clear
The situation is now crystal clear for the Republic of Ireland following Cameroon’s 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in today’s World Cup Group E game.
The men from the Middle East put up brave resistance against the African Nation champions following their nightmare 8-0 thrashing by Germany in their opening match - but, barring a miracle, it is not enough to save them an early exit.
What has now become clear to Mick McCarthy’s men is that due to the resilience of the Saudi Arabian defence if they win by just two goals against the same country next Tuesday they will be through to the knock-out stages of the world’s greatest tournament.
The Republic’s last-gasp draw against Germany yesterday put them on two points while Rudi Voller’s men and Cameroon are now locked on four points.
But because of Germany’s superior goal difference a draw would surely see them win the group unless Ireland could score more than eight goals.
A draw for the Irish, however, in Yokohama next week would see them crash out and on today’s show the Saudis certainly possess a real threat.
But at least the situation is now clear cut for the Irish and a victory by two clear goals on Tuesday would see them through and finish second in Group E with the winners of Group B - possibly well-fancied Spain - lying in wait.
