Injustice leaves Turkey coach cold

Defiant Turkey coach Senol Gunes complained there was ‘‘a great injustice’’ about Brazil’s 2-1 win in Ulsan.

Turkey had Alpay and Blackburn’s Hakan Unsal sent off, the latter for kicking the ball at Rivaldo.

Gunes was clearly unhappy about the dismissals but stopped short of criticising the referee.

‘‘We wanted three points but couldn’t get them for reasons I won’t mention,’’ said Gunes.

Aston Villa defender Alpay was sent off for pulling back Brazil substitute Luizao and Rivaldo made no mistake from the penalty spot to fire the South Americans ahead three minutes from time.

Ronaldo had grabbed a 50th-minute equaliser after Hasan Sas had fired Turkey ahead in first half injury time.

‘‘We came here with great pride and we leave with great pride. We produced a great effort and there is an injustice about the result,’’ groaned Gunes.

Despite his side’s defeat, Gunes is adamant they will still progress from Group C.

‘‘We have six points to get and we are going to get them,’’ vowed Gunes, whose side now face Costa Rica and China.
