Brazil captain sent home through injury

Brazil captain Emerson has been sent home from the World Cup after dislocating his shoulder in training.

The Roma midfielder was playing in goal during an informal training session and popped his shoulder out of joint when he dived to make a save.

Corinthians midfielder Ricardinho has been called up to replace him.

Emerson was examined in the dressing room, and his arm was immobilised and placed in ice at Munsu Stadium, where Brazil face Turkey on Monday in their opening Group C match.

"He will need four weeks to play football again," said team doctor Jose Luis Runco. "His participation in the World Cup is out of the question."

Fifa allow replacements to be called up for medical reasons up to 24 hours before a team's debut in the tournament.

Fifa approved the substitution and Brazil called up Ricardinho, who is expected to join the team by midweek.

Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari did not say who would replace Emerson in Monday's match. His immediate substitute is Vampeta, although Kleberson and Gilberto Silva also play in the position.

Rivaldo said the injury was a fluke, insisting: "Because he has no experience as a goalie, he fell the wrong way.

"It's a very serious loss. Emerson is a man of authority in his area and knew what it was to play in a World Cup. We really are very sad, but Brazil can't hang its head and lose its enthusiasm."
