Fernando Morientes is set to miss Spain’s World Cup opener against Slovenia after suffering an ankle injury in training.

The Real Madrid striker collided with Bernabeu team-mate Fernando Hierro during an Ulsan practice session.

Morientes had his foot bandaged and had to be helped off the pitch.

Team doctors feared the ankle was sprained, but the extent of the injury will not be known until Morientes has a scan.

If Morientes is ruled out of the Slovenia clash in Gwangju on Sunday then Spain coach Jose Camacho will have to choose between Deportivo La Coruna’s Diego Tristan and Albert Luque of Real Mallorca.
